Gene came to writing later, he was 72 when his memoir was published in 2005. But once he started, he didn’t stop. Over eight years, he produced five books, ranging from his own unflinching life story to tragicomic wartime romances.
His writing carried the qualities that made him beloved on screen: tenderness, unexpected humor, a deep affection for his characters, and a willingness to sit with the harder feelings a little longer than most.
