Something Wilder (1994-1995) marked Gene Wilder’s first foray into starring in a TV sitcom, a project that came during a time when he was looking to try new things in his career. The show, which aired on NBC, centered on Wilder’s character, Gene Bergman, a middle-aged husband and father navigating the challenges of raising young twins later in life. Wilder brought his signature warmth and humor to the role, but the show struggled to find its audience, running for just one season. Despite its brief run, Something Wilder gave fans a chance to see Wilder’s comedic talents in a more traditional TV format, with his trademark wit shining through in every episode.
Years later, Wilder reflected on Something Wilder with mixed feelings. While he enjoyed working with the cast and crew, and appreciated the opportunity to bring his humor to a sitcom, he acknowledged that the show didn’t quite hit the mark he had hoped for. Wilder felt the project lacked the unique spark that had defined his best work in film, and he was candid about his preference for movie-making over television. Still, he looked back fondly on the experience, valuing the creative challenge and the chance to connect with a different kind of audience, even if the series didn’t achieve lasting success.
