Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

Released on June 30, 1971

ROLES: Willy Wonka

One of Gene Wilder's most iconic performances, he portrayed the eccentric and enigmatic candy maker Willy Wonka in the film adaptation of Roald Dahl's beloved children's book. Wilder's portrayal of Wonka perfectly captured the character's whimsical nature, blending charm, mystery, and a touch of darkness, making it one of his most memorable roles.

The role that would eventually help make him famous around the world, Gene would often muse about being recognized by generation after generation of children as Willy Wonka.  He also spoke of his impact on the character's development by insisting that Wonka make his entrance with limp and cane... before executing a perfect summersault and ending with a big smile.

Karen Wilder: "When Gene and I would travel together on book tours, vacations... just anywhere... people would ask him about Willy Wonka, or tell him how much they loved him in that film!  Children would be shy but some would come over and ask for a hug.
